History

Stanes Anglo Indian Higher Secondary School has a very rich history, right from its humble beginning to its present day stature.

Stanes School was started by its founder Sir Robert Stanes in a rented house near Kumaran Market, in 1862, with two boys, two girls and two teachers. From there, the school moved to a house near the TELC Church, and operated there for more than 50 years. From there, the school was again shifted to a building, which is the General Post Office today.

As the number of students grew, Sir Robert Stanes bought the present campus and started building in 1927.

“The unseen foundation of the new building was being laid on the solid ground of God’s Word, the Bible” were Sir Robert Stanes’ words on the big day.

This school has ever been noted as a Protestant Evangelical School, where the word of God is read and taught daily.

Over these 157 years, the school has grown in leaps and bounds. The school ranks as one of the best schools not only in the city or state, but also in the country. The school follows the Tamil Nadu State Board syllabus in class XII and class X. The School has produced several state rank holders till date. Apart from academic performance, the school has been continuously doing well in the field of sports and games. The students have also won many laurels in the field of cultural activities too.

Today, this esteemed institution is an alma mater to plenty of successful individuals, responsible citizens and highly accomplished winners and leaders in the fields of business, medicine, engineering, education, science, technology and politics.

Our Founder

Our beloved Founder Sir Robert Stanes was born in London on May 13th 1841. His father was James Stanes, a ship – owner of London, a free born citizen of that city. Robert Stanes was educated at Campdon House School, Brighton. He schooled till the age of sixteen, after which he worked in the office of Tolman, Livingston & Co., Ship brokers, London.

At the tender age of seventeen, Sir Robert Stanes set sail for India, on his father’s ship ‘SS Trafalgar’and arrived in 1858. He immediately launched himself on a successful career as a coffee planter in Coimbatore.

Being convicted by the Holy Spirit after he read Bishop Ryle’s tract ASSURANCE, he at once commenced Sunday Bible School work for the Anglo-Indian children. Unfortunately, many of the children attending this Sunday School could neither read nor write. Moved by this, he started the Day school in November 1862. This was the humble beginning of the Stanes Anglo Indian Higher Secondary School.

It was Mr. Robert Stanes who gave to Coimbatore its industrial importance. In the memorable year 1861, he found the climate of Coimbatore suitable for the curing of coffee, and for the ginning of cotton.

In the year 1870, he married Harriet Huntingdon Harris in ENgland. Mr. Robert Stanes and Mrs. Stanes returned to Coimbatore at the end of 1870. They had six daughters and two sons. For the next 15 years the business (Stanes & Co.), the school –work and church services grew.

The school with its Founder, celebrated its Golden Jubilee in 1912. In 1914 Robert Stanes was awarded Kaiser –I-Hind gold medal, and was bestowed with Knighthood in the year 1920.

Sir Robert Stanes slept in the Lord in Coimbatore in 1936 and is buried alongside his wife, Harriet Huntingdon Harris (1843–1901), at All Saints church, Coonoor.

Vision

To be ‘At Home’ with the Lord along with the students of his school

Our beloved Founder desired that all the students of his school may accept Jesus as their Lord and Saviour so that they might spend their eternity in heaven In his letter, dated 13th August 1913 recorded in our school magazine ‘Then and Now’, he writes

Dear boys and girls,

“… I pray that the boys and girls of our School at Coimbatore may be amongst those who have found Christ as their own personal Saviour, so that one day we may all be ‘At Home’ with the Lord.”

Your sincere friend,

Robert Stanes
Stanes Founder

Mision

To build the character and lives of the students of his school in Lord Jesus

(In his requisition letter to lay the foundation stone for the school our beloved Founder Sir Robert Stanes writes thus to the Viscount)

“Your Excellencies will notice that the Foundation for this building is being laid on very solid ground, and we wish to add that in building up the character and lives of our boys great stress is laid on the teaching of the whole Bible – God’s Word- and we trust that all who may be connected to this Protestant Evangelical School in the future will remain true to the unchanging Word of God”.
Stanes Founder

Governing Board

The School is run under the able leadership of a Governing Board comprising of highly accomplished people from various walks of life. This includes Church Ministers, Educationists, Distinguished Citizens, Philanthropists and successful businessmen, who are serious about the development of the institution in the path that Sir Robert Stanes walked. Needless to say, some of them are Stanites of yesteryears.
